Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pet cremation urn?

Pet cremation urns are decorative cremation containers designed to hold the cremated remains of your lost dog, cat or pet.

What size dog urns, cat urns or pet urns are right for my pet?

The industry standard in the sizing of a pet cremation urn is one cubic inch of space for every one pound of pet so a 50 pound animal would require a 50 cubic inch urn. We recommend purchasing a pet urn that has a capacity a bit larger than this formula calls for. Some people choose to place a favorite toy or keepsake of the pet inside the pet urn, which calls for an urn with extra capacity.

When ordering a pet cremation urn, consider average pet weights:
  • Very Small Dog Breeds: 4 to 15 pounds
  • Small Dog Breeds: 20 to 35 pounds
  • Medium Dog Breeds: 40 to 65 pounds
  • Large Dog Breeds: 70 to 90 pounds
  • Very Large Dog Breeds: 100 to 150 pounds
  • Cats: 7 to 15 pounds

Are there any regulations or standards for building a pet urn or storing pet ashes? If so, what does PetUrnsUnlimited do to meet or exceed them?
All pet urns and cremation urns are shipped with a poly bag for the storage of the remains. The transfer of the remains into the urn is usually done at the crematory.

What is a cremation? Cremation is simply the hastening of natural processes, wherein through heat and evaporation the body is reduced to its basic elements.  It may surprise you to learn that ashes are not the final result, they are in fact bone fragments. These fragments are then further processed into a powdery substance and are called cremated remains.

Isn't pet cremation an end in itself? Some people may regard it as such, but most families feel the cremated remains of a pet they love should be afforded a resting place that can be identified by the name and dates.  This is memorialization.  Most families find that pet urns and memorials serve a basic human need to remember their loved pets.

How do I put the ashes in the urn? Typically your pet’s ashes, or cremains, are returned to you by the veterinarian or crematory providing your pet cremation services in a plastic box or other simple container. The ashes should be contained in a secured plastic bag within this container. You may transfer the entire plastic bag, with the cremains remaining the bag, into one of our pet urns.

If you find it's necessary to repackage the cremains, we suggest using an appropriately sized zip lock bag, or a plastic bag secured with a tie. Cremains are bagged to prevent an accidental loss should the pet urn be dropped or damaged.
